Vlado Kapetanovic's first reported contact, Huallanca Hydroelectric Plant, Peru — March 10, 1960
THINK ABOUTIT’S ALIEN TYPE SUMMARY – Apuians
Correction Notice: This entry has been checked directly against Vlado Kapetanovic’s own account and interviews. His real testimony is more specific and, in places, different from what was previously published — including a variable height range rather than a fixed one, and his own quoted physical description. Invented biometrics and an unsupported classification have been removed.
On the night of March 10, 1960, the power went out at the Huallanca hydroelectric plant in Ancash, Peru. The engineer on duty, a Montenegrin immigrant named Vlado Kapetanovic, went out to investigate — and by his own account, that night began decades of contact with beings who said they came from a planet called Apu. He would go on to write four books about it, address an international UFO conference to a standing ovation, and spend the rest of his life insisting none of it required any special preparation to witness.
Name: Apuians (also Apunians, Apurianos)
AKA: Apunians, Apurianos — variant spellings used across Kapetanovic’s own materials and translations
Location – Home System: A planet called Apu, described by Kapetanovic as “many millions of light years” from our galaxy — an extragalactic claim in his own words
Distance from Earth: Per Kapetanovic, “many millions of light years”; no more precise figure is given in his account
Attitude: Benevolent and altruistic, per Kapetanovic’s consistent account across decades of testimony
Motives: Per Kapetanovic, protecting life throughout the universe and modeling a moneyless, altruistic society as an example for Earth; he described their visits continuing until humanity achieves what he called a “brotherly union”
Physical Appearance: Kapetanovic described them as looking like humans, but more proportionally built, with height that varies by individual — some over two meters, some shorter. In his own writing, he described their features as resembling a blend of several Earth ethnicities, concluding they most resembled, in overall proportion, people of Mongolian heritage.
- Average Height: Variable, per Kapetanovic — “as tall as they wish to; some are taller than two meters and some are shorter”; no fixed range is given
- Average Weight: Undocumented
- Body Temperature: Undocumented
- Pulse/Respiration: Undocumented
- Blood Pressure: Undocumented
- Life Expectancy: Undocumented
- Hair: Not specifically detailed in the material reviewed
- Skin: Described by Kapetanovic as a rosy-white tone
- Eyes: Described by Kapetanovic as resembling those of the Mongolian racial type, in his own comparative description
- Sex: Both male and female individuals appear throughout Kapetanovic’s account
Other Physical Information: Kapetanovic described their features as not clearly attributable to any single Earth ethnic group, instead resembling a blend — facial structure like Arabs, nose like Nordics, beard like the Hindu type — in his own comparative terms, while their overall proportions most reminded him of the Mongolian race.
Special Traits and Abilities: Kapetanovic described witnessing healing abilities performed aboard their craft, and reported that individual members could fly independently using a one-piece suit, which was demonstrated to him directly
Communication Type: Verbal, per Kapetanovic’s decades of direct conversation with them
Origin: The planet Apu, per Kapetanovic’s account
Life Form Type: Humanoid, described as very close to human in appearance
Subspecies: Undocumented
Most Common Species: Undocumented
Level of Species: Undocumented as a formal classification; Kapetanovic describes a moneyless, altruistic society with technology far beyond Earth’s, including craft capable of extreme speeds and displays that could show past events
Habits: Per Kapetanovic, conducting healing missions among remote Altiplano shepherd communities who lacked access to medical care, and observing (without direct interference in) Earth’s own progress toward flight technology
Transportation Type: Craft described by Kapetanovic as capable of extreme velocities, leaving no ground marks upon landing, equipped with viewing screens that could display past events, and reportedly using a fundamental particle he called “minius” as part of their propulsion theory. Individual members were also reportedly able to fly independently using specialized suits.
Witnesses Reports: Vlado Kapetanovic (born 1918, Kolasin, Montenegro; died 2005), a hydroelectric engineer who emigrated to Peru after World War II, reported his first contact on March 10, 1960, during a power outage at the Huallanca Hydroelectric Plant in Ancash, Peru. He described hundreds of hours of subsequent contact over the following decades, documented in several self-published books, including one co-published with UFO researcher Wendelle Stevens. Kapetanovic was invited to address Stevens’ First International UFO Congress, where he reportedly received a standing ovation. Secondary, less-verified corroboration includes housemate Julio Longo, Peruvian UFO researcher Anthony Choy (who reported speaking with neighbors who separately saw UFOs near Kapetanovic’s home), and Tobías Sarmiento, Kapetanovic’s successor at the Huallanca plant. None of this secondary corroboration has been independently verified by this site.
Special Features/Characteristics: Kapetanovic identified four claimed historical landing sites tied to ancient civilizations: Nazca (Peru), Chichen Itza (Mexico), a site he associated with Atlantis, and Zhoukoudian in China — each marked, per his account, with a common candlestick-shaped symbol.
Summary/Description: A decades-long contact case centered on Vlado Kapetanovic, a named and identifiable Peruvian hydroelectric engineer, describing an altruistic, moneyless civilization from a planet called Apu. Well-documented within contactee ufology circles, with some secondary witness corroboration, though none independently verified.

DETAILED REPORT
The Apuians entry benefits from something relatively rare in this genre: a named, identifiable, long-term witness whose story remained broadly consistent across more than four decades and multiple published accounts, and who was directly interviewed on record as late as 1994. That consistency doesn’t make the underlying claim true, but it does make this a stronger sourcing situation than most entries reviewed on this site.
The previous version of this page replaced Kapetanovic’s own words with generic invented biometrics and a “Type II” classification that appear nowhere in his actual testimony. In several places, his real account is more specific and more interesting than the invention that replaced it — a variable height rather than a fixed range, a distance given in his own words as “millions of light years,” and a detailed, if unusual, comparative physical description in his own writing.
RESEARCHER’S NOTES
Four Decades, One Witness — Kapetanovic and the Apu Contact
- Source Chain Assessment: Kapetanovic is named, identifiable, and documented across independent interviews spanning decades, published by a known UFO investigator (Wendelle Stevens). This is a comparatively strong single-witness case.
- Fidelity to Source: The previous draft’s invented biometrics contradicted Kapetanovic’s own stated variable height. Restoring his actual words, even where they’re less tidy than a fixed range, is more honest than smoothing them into a standard profile.
- Secondary Corroboration, Unverified: Named secondary witnesses (Longo, Choy, Sarmiento) exist in the record but their accounts have not been independently verified by this site and should be weighted as such.
- Evidentiary Weight: This remains, at its core, a single long-term witness’s account. Decades of consistency is notable, but it is not independent corroboration.
WRAP-UP PARAGRAPH
Kapetanovic’s own account, taken on its own terms, is a richer and stranger story than the generic profile that had replaced it — a moneyless utopian philosophy, healing missions to shepherds with no access to doctors, four ancient landing sites marked by a candlestick symbol, and a man who held to the same story for over forty years. Whatever one makes of the underlying claim, it deserved to be represented in his own terms.
QUOTE FROM THE POST
Asked how the Apuians look, Kapetanovic said: “They look the same as us, yet they are physically better proportioned.” (Vlado Kapetanovic, interview with Giorgio Piacenza, 1994)
REMOVED CLAIMS (Archived for Reference)
These details appeared in an earlier version of this page and either contradict Kapetanovic’s own testimony or have no traceable source. Archived here rather than deleted.
- Fixed height range of 6’2″–6’10”: contradicts Kapetanovic’s own description of variable height
- Full biometric panel (weight, body temperature, pulse, blood pressure, life expectancy of 800–1,200 years) — no source
- “Type II” Kardashev classification — no source
- “De-materialize” phasing ability — no source in the material reviewed; Kapetanovic describes individual flight via suits, not phasing through matter
- Vague distance framing (“beyond the reach of current human telescopes”) — Kapetanovic’s own words give a more specific, if still imprecise, figure: “many millions of light years”
